Catherine Osgood and Minneapolis Department Stores

As a young woman, Catherine (Parker) Osgood started her career working for two Minneapolis department stores. The photograph above shows her in front of Donaldson's on Nicollet Avenue near 7th Street. The Donaldson's marquee is clearly visible in the larger version of the picture. She then worked for the chief buyer, Annette Bensen, at Power's Department Store at 5th and Nicollet. The stores were bought out by larger chains in the 1980's and both buildings are gone.

Coincidentally, the photograph of Catherine was taken on the spot where Mary Tyler Moore (representing another young woman starting out in Minneapolis) filmed the famous hat-toss scene in the opening credits of her TV show (which was ranked the second most-memorable moment in television by Entertainment Weekly). That was also shot at Nicollet and 7th in front of Donaldson's. You can see the red "Open Tonight" sign in both pictures:
